Edgar Hagen 1996 81'

One day the painter Markus Schneider abandons his home, wife and six children to begin a new life as a wanderer. Money, official papers, a fixed abode – he renounces them all. He now calls himself “Markus Jura Suisse”. For nearly 20 years he has been roaming around Switzerland, attempting to establish new relations with each person he meets. Graffiti provocatively left in public places serve as reminders of passing. Always drawn in the same identical way, the graffiti becomes a kind of signature. It consists of three concentric circles, encircles by the date. These “bad habits” get him into trouble with the law, and he is arrested again and again. The film of Edgar Hagen accompanies Markus on this journey through a “highly developed” country, and asks in the same breath as this extraordinary travelling companion: “Just what is it that makes life worth living”.
