The Price of True is a double portrait about two whistleblowers. Margrit Zopfi and Sherron Watkins informed the public about financial fraud at their workplace and paid a high price for uncovering the truth.
In 2007, Margrit Zopfi, as controller, had made public the misuse of social welfare funds of the city of Zurich. Her act deeply divided the public. As a result of her exposure, she and her comrade-in-arms Esther Wyler were found guilty of violating official secrets.
Sherron Watkins was vice president of the US service and energy company Enron. In 2001, she informed the company's management about inconsistencies in the balance sheets. Later it turned out that the company had systematically falsified figures. Enron went bankrupt.
These two women share a strong sense of social and moral responsibility that ultimately led them to uncover the truth about abuses in their workplace. In personal conversations and interviews with close allies and various experts, their story is unravelled. In retrospect, we learn what personal and social toll the two women had to pay for their actions.
