In Protestant Zurich, people with money tend to adopt a low profile. Wealth inspires both fascination and envy. The four people who are the subject of this film are all in search of happiness. A man of private means who unexpectedly comes into a large fortune, prefers to remain anonymous and enjoy the luxury of a life of leisure. An heiress from one of Zurich's oldest families decides for religious reasons to renounce her earthly wealth and estate. A self-made entrepreneur whose international print media empire continues to grow and grow, likes to be seen as a big spender. And finally a man who lives on welfare while fighting in the courts to have his assets restored by a certain bank, looks back regretfully at the days when he was a man of wealth. Accompanied by the four movements of Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, Der Duft des Geldes (the smell of money) wafts us from the flickering screens of currency managers and stock exchanges to the celebrated Bahnhofstrasse and beyond to the lake with its necklace of villas and yachts.
