A movie that shows the process how a Parisian woman turned into prostitute for living. Nana (Anna Karina), after being divorced, tried everything she could such as modeling , acting, and working as shop clerk without being successful to sustain her daily living. But the cold blooded mechanism of the society where Capitalism was the centre of its move frustrated her, socially minimized, everytime she tried. Her only option was Raoul (Sady Rebbot), a pimp in the prostitution world. A new love came to Nana, now a prostitute, but as always, the misconduct of outsiders couldn't be forgiven or accepted resulting in another catastrophe and tragedy.
In this film regarded as 'filmed essay' attempted by Godard for the first time and brought commercial success to him, the charm of Anna Karina, his wife of the time was overwhelming. It contains 12 "tableaux" in total in which each one is independent on its own yet directed into one ending. It also takes a form of fictional narration that caption title announces the outline of each sequence. a bizarre scene shown in the dialogue of 2 people, exposure of camera using a mirror or back head scene, all these shows that Godard continues his format experiment and study on the movies. Yet this film remains one of a few Godard films that has lingering impact not only in the head but on the heart left by the music composed by the great Michel Legrand and the charm of Anna Karina leaves.
The title includes the meaning 'living by one's belief' but the heroin Nana doesn't live in that way. Although this film is about the life of Nana, it features the general conditions of women's survival. Some scenes on the half run of the film showing the reality of a prostitute's life in a documentary style is Godard's way of prostitution sociology as he so effectively caught the moments of commercial transaction deal with a body in money. This film is also a love letter sent by Godard to his wife of the time, Anna Karina who acted as Nana. Karina's beautiful facial expression in tears shown in a silent picture of a director Carl Dreyer [La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc] as she realized her destiny to be burned at the stake alive is almost incomprehensive."
