Punk Cocktail
Zurich Scene 1976-80
René Uhlmann
1976–80: Even though the exponents of Zurich’s Punk-, New Wave- and Art-Scene operated in the poorly-lit underground, René Uhlmann rejected the use of spotlights. Instead, he filmed with an open shutter and only a few pictures a second. This form of time-lapse provided sufficient exposure. During play-back, the intentionally slowed-down projection generated ‘juddering’ image sequences and dynamic blurring effects. Consequently, at parties and concerts arose a mesmerizing symbiosis between the film on the wall and the rhythm of the Live-sounds.
2006: René Uhlmann has now digitized a selection of his Underground-films created some thirty years ago and, for the first time, set them to music – using the original local songs from the time period. Through precise cuts, subtle speed adjustments and expert overlays, the no longer entirely coincidental beat-synchronicity has been catapulted into a new dimension.
The sum is called Punk Cocktail and offers exquisite Concert- and Scene-clips, as well as fast-paced animation films that are unprecedented in style and expressive-ness. Now as then.
