The theatre company “mondes contraires”, which means “opposite worlds”, intends on exploring cultural differences through the medium of theatrical expression. Their dream is to produce a play together with Mongolian actors. As things develop, the good intentions of the small troupe start turning sour, confronted by the social, cultural and economic realities of a country in full decline.
"A motley group of actors, dancers and musicians
launches into the most improbable
enterprise of giving a performance in the
middle of the Mongolian steppe for the few
nomads inhabiting the place.The group’s idea
is to confront different cultures and working
methods, and to come out with both a show
and a lesson.The Swiss and Mongolian working
methods end up often clashing, with the
Mongolians reproaching the Genevans their
total lack of organisation. Numerous disagreements
crop up throughout the adventure.
The whole story is based upon the idea
of the journey into the middle of nowhere –
but one must still find one’s way! There is
something naive to the whole spirit behind
this strange expedition, which to the viewer
lends its charm. But one day, in spite of it all,
the show unfolds before the surprised but
alert gaze of the nomads come from all
corners of the horizon.
The adventure is well rendered by Camille
Cottagnoud. Capturing the incredible beauty
of the place and the delicate relationship
between the actors and the Mongolians, as
well as the sometimes persistent bewilderment.
Mondes contraires is a somewhat
crazy project, at times verging on absurdity,
but not devoid of style."
