Jean-Luc Godard

This film is Godard's way of essay film focuses on French young people in 1960s dealing with their value judgement, political views, daily life and sex, centering especially Paul, just retired from military army (Jean-Pierre Leaud), his girlfriend Madelein (Chantal Goya) dreaming of being a pop singer and their friends and associates. Before and after this film, movies of Godard turned into 'filmed essay' and his narrative way eventually faded out. Therefore, it is too much to try summarizing the story. There is one sentence captioned showing the whole content in a very compressive way in this movie. " The children of Marx and Coca Cola is what this movie is all about. "

This is a movie in which 'politic' surfaces on the screen for the first time, that issomething to identify the Godard's movie world from late 1960s. Godard dismantles the form of movie more and more in order to express dilemma of young French in 1960s in broader concept by this film( As the impressive caption say, the insecure identification between paradigms of different natures symbolized by 'Marx' and 'Coca Cola') and 'Godard's personal comments' are more clarified through these form-free attempts. This movie has very important meaning not only because of the famous caption ('Marx' and 'Coca Cola') but as a bud of coming 'political Godard' period. At the time I watched this move ( perhaps 1994....), I was an in-between marxist, being tired of stern (maybe doctrinismic ?) Marxism and also I was a Cola-mania drinking 1.5 liter of coke almost everyday, funny ! As a philosopher commented, even though 'Signifiant'(movie) is sliding infinitely unable to reach 'Signifie'(reality) , this can be considered as real nice home-steal sliding.
