This is a sensitive look at the life of Swiss artist, Louis Conne, who lived in Paris, New York and Zürich. Aged 98, Louis Conne reflects on his life spanning almost a century. Alberto and Diego Giacometti, long time companions and friends from his time in Paris have long since died. All he has left are memories and stirring works.
Louis Conne was born in Zurich in 1905. He spent his wanderjahr in the Paris of the
1920s where he studied under Antoine Bourdelle at the Académie de la Grande
Chaumière. Alberto Giacometti was a fellow student at the time and the two of them
later became friends. Conne moved to New York for three years before settling again
in Paris. He became a member of the "Abstraction-Création" group and exhibited his
surrealist works in their gallery. Shortly before the war broke out he left France and
returned to Switzerland. His most important works were created in the 1950s and
consist of dematerialised, fragmented and existentialist compound forms. Thus, in
the tradition of modelling and primordial creativity, he realized an age-old endeavour
of mankind: to use design to mirror the impressions of his sensual world.

Production Anecdote: A glass of wine
The production team had to take Louis Conne’s advanced age into consideration. During filming, after a just an hour or so of work, Louis would invite us to drink a glass of red wine with him at midday. Although we were eager to continue working, he cunningly brushed away our protests that we would get tipsy by retorting: "Precisely!"
Louis Conne died soon after the film was completed.
