European Parliament votes to exclude AV-services from the EU-US trade negotiation
At the plenary sitting in Strasbourg, the European Parliament has just voted a resolution on the EU-US trade talks (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership - TTIP). A large majority (381 in favour, 191 against and 17 abstentions) ask that cultural and audiovisual services, including online ones, be excluded from the negotiating mandate, in order to protect the cultural and linguistic diversity of EU countries.
Paragraph 11 of the resolution states (full text):
“Considers it essential for the EU and its Member States to maintain the possibility of preserving and developing their cultural and audiovisual policies, and to do so in the context of their existing laws, standards and agreements; calls, therefore, for the exclusion of cultural and audiovisual services, including those provided online, to be clearly stated in the negotiating mandate;”
This is good news, as it sends a strong political signal to the European Commission and EU Trade Ministers. EU governments and in particular Trade Ministers will decide on the negotiating mandate of the Commission on 14 June.

WHERE THE CONDORS FLY von Carlos Klein im Kino 2013-05-24 (German)
The National on STOP-OVER (L'ESCALE)
“Just going out to buy toothpaste was an unimaginable risk,” says the director Kaveh Bakhtiari about the protagonists of his documentary L'ESCALE. The film follows the comings and goings at the apartment of Amir, an Iranian immigrant living in Athens, Greece, which has become a place of transit for others who, like him, have decided to leave their country. Most, but far from all, are from Iran. Nearly all of these migrants see Greece as a stepping stone to the West. Practically all of them get stuck in Greece as they wait for identification papers, contacts to appear and smugglers who might help them move on.

AFP: Documentaries ar rising stars in film
Blockbuster features that cost $100 million or more may grab the headlines, but the area of filmmaking that is growing fastest is documentaries, say industry sources at the Cannes Film Festival. Driving the trend, they say, is a widening demand for films that go beyond fiction and instead touch on today's realities.
No documentaries are included in the 20 titles running for this year's top prize. But plenty are featuring in other competition categories or out of competition -- and some are being acclaimed.
"Documentaries are becoming more popular because they help to give a nuanced response to socio-economic problems that are more and more a source of concern," said Irene Challand, head of documentaries at Radio Television Suisse, which are one of the backers of L'ESCALE.

Hollywood Reporter: APRES LA NUIT (ATE VER A LUZ)
Combining hard-hitting street realism with a generic gangster story reminiscent of everything from BOYZ N THE HOOD to various episodes of THE SOPRANOS, ATE VER A LUZ marks an intriguing, though rather underwhelming, debut feature from the 28-year-old Swiss-born Portuguese filmmaker Basil da Cunha. Set within the Creole-speaking Cap Verdean community of Reboleira – a sprawling dilapidated ghetto just outside of Lisbon – the movie wins points for its gritty, documentary-style portrait of people scraping by on the fringes of Western European society.
