Family Music
Pierre-Yves Borgeaud
Musicians and brothers Wolfgang and Christian Muthspiel have been playing together as a duo for over 20 years. In FAMILY MUSIC, the Austrian brothers return to the origins of their musical vocation and talk about their relationship with their father who died in 2001. Interwoven with a mix of concert pictures and Super-8 family films, Borgeaud’s film is a simple but strong tale about the intimate connection between artistic creation and life itself.
Christian and Wolfgang Muthspiel, two musician
brothers, were born in a family where
music was an inherent part of daily life. To
them it was like bread and butter. Their father,
a talented amateur filmmaker, recorded the
images of their family life. It is from this rich
material that Pierre-Yves Borgeaud draws the
scenes of a happy, close-knit family. Holidays
by the sea, hikes in the mountains, picnics and
improvised concerts in the countryside are
magnified by the grain and the slightly saturated
colours of Super-8.
The montage alternates between close-ups of
the hands of the two musicians and sequences
in Super-8. The music on screen develops off
screen in the films of their childhood, creating
echoes between the two types of shots.
Christian, the pianist, sets the tempo; the
family on skis flexing their knees together
which, through contagion, transforms into a
hoola hoop dance in a field. This sequence
is very representative of the fusion between
music, cinema and private life which is
the mould for Family Music (The Music of
Christian & Wolfgang Muthspiel). Gradually the
scenic setup emerges. The musicians are performing
a feat: they are playing the soundtrack
directly to the films of their childhood.
The silhouettes stand out in the foreground
of the images and past and present are
superimposed.
Starting with the traditional tunes their father
conducted as a choirmaster, then adding jazz
and its improvisations, their pay a vibrant
tribute to this man who dedicated his life to
bringing together the people and the things
he loved: his family, music and film.
