Samir

Two pieces of art build the base of this portrait about Zurich’s main station. Not only is the more than 160 years old train station a European intersection, it is also a shopping centre and a cultural event hall. What is it that makes this main station to one of the most interesting train station of Europe?

Every traveller who comes to Zurich’s main station, will first discover, high up at the ceiling of the huge arrival hall, a piece of art made by Niki de Saint-Phalle: the more than 10 meter big sculpture «L’Ange protecteur». The artist Niki the Saint-Phalle built the angel in 1997 for the main station hall. Since the main station has once more been rebuild in the mid 90is, the vast hall as been given to the travellers disposal.

Those travellers who admired the floating angel, often don’t notice the artwork behind them: «The philosophical egg» by Mario Merz. It is fixed to the bright glass panel of the western side. Which finishes the arrival hall and stands crossways to the old train station hall of the 19th century.

The Italian Arte-Povera-Artist Mario Merz built this installation in 1992, based on his occupation with the Fibonacci-numbers. The red neon spirals, the blue numbers and the animals are best admired by twilight.

Both pieces of art build the foundation for the realisation of this movie about Zurich’s main station.
