The Man of Black and White
Adrian Frutiger is one of the most important type designers of our time: The Swiss, born on 24 May 1928 in Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland and now living in Berne after over 40 years in Paris, has created more than thirty fonts, including the world-famous Méridien, Univers and Frutiger type families. Frutiger has worked for IBM and type manufacturers such as Linotype and Westiform, and designed logos and signage systems. Corporations like the Swiss Post Office have adopted his fonts. Less well-known are his freely conceived works in which the designer gave wonderful expression to his desire for pictorial representations which convey more than words.
This film is a straightforward, sensitive portrait of the designer and his work. It presents Adrian Frutiger's extraordinary achievements in a new way, giving prominence to him and his relationship to nature which influenced him all his life. The cinematography in high definition by the cameraman Christoph Frutiger is accompanied by the script by the journalist Christine Kopp who codirected the film with him. Photographs by the well-known Swiss cameraman Pio Corradi and old filmfootage add to the very personal portrait. The music was mostly composed by Hanery Amman, nota bene one of Switzerland's best-known songwriters whose work has won several Gold and Platinum Records. Like Adrian and his nephew Christoph Frutiger, he comes from Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland. The landscape shooting by Christoph Frutiger in the film is also from this region.
