They don’t want to understand it...

A winter attempt on the Maestri-Egger route

We travel to Patagonia with four Swiss mountaineers. Thomas Ulrich, one of the four and worldwide known adventure and outdoor photographer, tells us the tale of this journey.

It’s winter and the four accomplished mountaineers want to climb one of the most famous routes: the so called “Maestri-Egger” on Cerro Torre. 1959, Cesare Maestri and Toni Egger did the first ascent of this beautiful ice and granit needle via the east and north faces. Egger died on the descent in an avalanche. Although many climbers tried to do it, the route hasn’t been repeated since then.

Our protagonists – David Fasel, Michal Pitelka, Stephan Siegrist and Thomas Ulrich – have a lot of experience in Patagonian climbing in winter and summer. But this time, the mountain turns them back. That doesn’t mean they don’t have a lot of fun. This film is a homage to friendship, happiness, the beauty of nature – and to the performances of alpinists such as Casimiro Ferrari (a famous Italian pioneer they encounter on their way), Cesare Maestri and Cesarino Fava.

Thomas Ulrich

Thomas Ulrich was born on 16 November 1967 in Interlaken, Bernese Oberland, where he lives with his family. Besides his professional formation to become a carpenter and a mountain guide, Thomas starts early with extreme climbing. In 1988, Thomas travels for the first time to Patagonia; in the meantime, he has added four more expeditions to this place. With three friends he climbed Cerro Torre in 1999 via the west face; it was the first winter ascent of this route and the story was published on National Geographic magazine in March 2000. Right now, he is traversing the Hielo Continental Sur (Patagonia) with the Norwegian adventurer Boerge Ousland for National Geographic. Thomas started his career to become one of the world famous adventure photographer as an autodidact. His pictures are published on magazines such as Animan, Life, Sports Illustrated and he works for several commercial clients in the outdoor market. Besides that, Thomas has begun to work as a cameraman and filmmaker, partly for TV stations. His first short film on a bigwall climb in California won a prize at the filmfestival of Trento and entered the finales of Banff Mountainfilm Festival.
