1974 UNE PARTIE DE CAMPAGNE. Under this title reminiscent of
Renoir, hides a fantastic comedy in which the issue at stake is
as much the image of power as the power of the image. Giscard
d’Estaing, the first modern French president, a man of the
media rather than of his word, is very much a man of our times.
Wherever he goes, microphones are held out, flashlights crackle
and cameras film. A skilful tactician, he plays on his image
wonderfully well, and his lesson is still ringing in the ears of the
candidates for the coming presidential election.
At the origin of the order for the film was Giscard himself, at
that time Minister of Finance,who wanted a film for his personal
records. The assumed reference of the producer: Primary by
Richard Leacock, who followed the JFK campaign in the style of
direct cinema. A declared intention : to capture, in the Wiseman
manner, the exercise of power and the significant gestures that
betray the technocrat. But whereas the American film maker
gives priority to the institution, Depardon prefers the character
that emanates from it.
France at that time had as much confidence in itself and its
future as the man seemed master of his image and convinced
of his victory. Giscard glides through meetings and ministerial
sessions with the same smooth and casual ease. Although the
first part of the film relies heavily on crowd scenes, the second
opts for the panelled walls of ministries where campaign plans
are given the finishing touches. And the polished performer is
revealed as a lone wolf. With Giscard, France enters the era of
the all-pervading image. And Depardon, never fooled, is the
privileged witness of it all.
